NDSU ENGL 320 Blog 4
By Thane Kruk
For this blog post we were challenged to "live in the moment" by taking some time to sit quietly for as long as we could with zero distractions. The purpose of this challenge was to try and slow down daily life for a little bit and appreciate it as is. I think this is a good exercise for anyone to try, especially if you ever reach a point in your day where you feel overwhelmed or stressed out.
I completely agree that people tend to not live in the moment and instead try to live in the future. I too am guilty of this as I am always trying to check the next task off my bucket list or come up with a new idea for work. Although you may think that always thinking and working towards something is the only way to achieve it, you may be wrong. Sometimes all you need is to sit down take a deep breathe and try to focus on absolutely nothing. If you clear your mind of all stressors and other thoughts, it can actually allow you to think more clearly and appreciate where you are in life right now.
I took approximately 15-20 minutes of zero distractions when conducting this exercise. At first I thought I was just completely waisting my time as I felt that I could be working on other homework and making better use of my time then sitting around doing nothing. However, I really tried to focus on the moment and why I was doing this. After my time was up and I went back to my regular lifestyle I realized how relaxing it was to take a moment of silence and hear absolutely nothing. It honestly made me tired and wanting to take a nap, much different from my typical go go go lifestyle.
During the actual exercise itself, I tried to focus on slowing my breathing and really relax. I realized how much I enjoyed the calm and quiet for a little bit as I never really get much peace and quiet. I was able to fully relax for a bit, I had my eyes closed just enjoying the comfort of the couch I was sitting on. I could see traffic driving by out the window and all the people going about their day as usual. This showed me that the world does not slow down for much so sometimes you need to slow down and enjoy it.
Overall I think this exercise is very beneficial to anyone who lives a fast pace lifestyle. Even if you don't, it is still a good exercise to try, as I think the exercise really helps anyone appreciate the moment instead of thinking about he future constantly. Taking time out of your day to be thankful and appreciate all the opportunities that have presented themselves to you is a great way to stay living in the moment. I believe by consistently practicing this exercise it helps one stay thankful for all moments in life and not just the seemingly special ones.
